Clean Chicken

Advertising and propoganda works, at least on me. In a typical cheesy book teaching you how to attain unlimited wealth called The Wellness Revolution (yes, I bought it), it is predicted that wellness will grow into a trillion dollar industry within the next ten years. No prize for guessing that we now are have higher than before risk of contracting a large variety of what is known as lifestyle diseases such as cancer, stroke and heart attacks.

Each one of us would have our own ways of combating with these threats to our own health. If you are as cynical as I am, the boom of wellness industries may just be there to provide us with a perceived sense of security that we may be doing the right thing. No one out there really knows the truth. Nevertheless, we still try.

An average chicken raised in a farm lives only for 45 days before it is cleaned, packed and driven to the local market or sit chilled in the supermarket. You can watch this and probably won’t feel like eating chicken for a couple of days.

So what choices do we have in this modern, industrialized world?

For the past couple of months, I have been trying out this so-called clean chicken. The first time, I roasted the whole bird sans marinade except sea salt and freshly ground pepper. It certainly tasted different and better. At home, we usually serve this chicken steamed whole to be accompanied by just soy ginger dipping sauce. Why? Because the meat tasted firm and had its natural sweetness. There was no need to hide the taste of meat in thick tasting sauces.

To be honest, whether or not this clean chicken is really better, I will never know. At least the facts that were presented to me made it a preferred choice.
