Edinburgh : Grey Wonders

The plane landed smoothly after cutting through the skies for the past 80 minutes. The first step into the airport terminal felt so strange. All around signs greeted me in English. Inside I suddenly missed background speeches of “Danke schoen!” and “Bitte schoen!”.

Though we had never stepped foot into Edinburgh, it seemed like we returned home. A home where we could understand the language and read the signs. This is was the first place we have been for the past 4 weeks which operated in English. When foreign language surrounded us, a cloud of anonymity hovered. Just as the others could not understand us and we didn’t understand them, ignorance become bliss.

Almost 5 weeks and I read my first English language newspaper. I didn’t miss it at all. No good news is better than bad news and bad news was all I got.

Mention Edinburgh and your most likely response would be, “Cold”, “Wet” or “Gloomy”. The weather did not surprise us. It was exactly as described. Strange though amidst the greyness, this city didn’t need any sunshine to make it as beautiful as it already is.
