Birthday @ La Table d’Hote

We are always looking forward to birthdays, our own and others. Though acknowledging our increasing age is not why we give hugs, presents and presence to each celebration, birthdays mark more than just a number. Growing up brings more responsibilities, expected maturity and most of all wisdom.

When the day arrives, a warm retrospective feeling does cast its rays on me (Yes, I know I’m 5 months late to ponder about my birthday). Looking back into past years, I do recall sending out sms’es to cherished friends. From those who have seen me grow out teenage acne and puppy love, to the ones who in the year itself came into my life like a lucky star. Some years I may not have hit the ‘Send’ button, but my thoughts are filled with them.

Birthdays and dinners, they come hand in hand. Food is celebratory to mark this poignant occasion so not having an extra-ordinary meal is really anti-climax. It was my brother’s turn to mark his hatch day and we’ve chosen to give this new French restaurant in town a try : La Table d’Hote, a rustic and casual place, not a hoity-toity piece of France we often encounter.

It began with traditional french onion soup, my first ever.
I never gave this soup a chance before, quite a mistake. If you are imagining a really raw, tear-jerking onion, this would be a pleasant surprise. Sweet and comforting, exactly what I needed on a rainy Saturday night.

Among our mains include “Pork knuckle with citrus & honey sauce and grilled T-bone pork chop”.

The restaurant also serves a fabulous selection of crepe suzettes which I didn’t try because we brought our own excellent profiterole chocolate tart from Matthias in Bangsar. I overhead the owner reciting to the next table, “Chocolate banana, vanilla, apple….” Next time, I’ll do only dessert!
