Schliersee : Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte

Blackforest

Black Forest or Schwarzwald, is a region in Germany which is a top draw tourist attraction located in its south west part. The Blackforest cake has its origin from this region. Though the Berghof, where I was staying for the anatomy course is not located anywhere close to this region, it is fairly easy to find a very decent slice of black forest cake in Bavaria too.

On our first day off, several of us from the course decided to head to the nearby lake for a hike. Expecting a beautiful day of clear skies, we were greeted with a heavy overcast instead. Nevertheless, we went ahead after slight delay and instead just strolled along the lakeside in the quiet, calm and almost deserted town of Schliersee.

Konditorei

To hide away from the drizzly rain, we first entered a coffee specialist cafe and gathered all the tables they had inside for the seven of us. Yes it was that small. Not quite satisfied after coffee and our packed lunch we brought from the farm, we headed next door to this confectionery for some cake.

Along the walls, there are award certificates from bread competitions in Germany. With my minimal German, I could make out that this bakery had won many silver prizes in the past years. No wonder their blackforest cake tasted so good, we could only murmur with each bite.
